Evelyn started kindergarten this year and it is her first experience with school lunch. I knew she would love the independence of getting her own food and picking out her selections. One thing I forgot to anticipate was her sweet tooth...
In the lunch line they are able to pick out their own milk cartons. They have a few options. Chocolate milk, white milk, or strawberry milk. The other girls know they are expected to get the white milk. They were thrilled to report to me that they have caught Evelyn getting the strawberry milk. The other girls don't even like the strawberry milk because they said it is so sweet and syrupy.
That night I talked to Evelyn and told her she needs to get the white milk. She agreed. The next day she got the strawberry milk again. Of course her sisters were quick to tell on her again!! So when I talked to her that night she started crying and begged me to let her bring a lunch to school instead of buying a lunch. Through tears she said the temptation is just too great. She can't stand going through the line and seeing the strawberry milk and not getting it. 😂😂
Hearing this precious 5 year old's tenderheart tell me about the temptation of having to walk away from strawberry milk has made me laugh from the pure sweetness of it. I just love her SWEETtoothed heart so much!
the other memory has to do with nora. One day she told me, "Guess what! Today at lunch my friend the lunch lady gave me free ice cream!"
🤔
Of course I needed more information?! So after some more prodding, apparently Nora has befriended one of the Cafeteria Workers and the employee decided to offer Nora an ice cream one day at lunch. Apparently, Nora is one of the few kids that takes the time to talk to the cafeteria workers and has developed a relationship with her. This memory brings a big smile to my face because this is no surprise. One of God's special gifts he has given Nora is a heart for others. People of all ages and stages are naturally drawn to her. In a lot of ways this skill reminds me of her late grandpa. After his death we realized that just about everyone he interacted with was convinced that he or she was a favored friend/coworker/neighbor/postman/etc of his (and my sisters and I all are convinced that we are his favorite daughter.... But truly I know for certain it was me.)
This is one of my favorite parts of Nora and I can't wait to see how God develops this trait and uses it for His Glory!
